Mein Pferderennen * my horse race

Assalamu aleikum,

(English version below)

Meine Stute tänzelte nervös hin und her.

English version:

Assalamu aleikum,

A few years ago I took part in a horse race in Bavaria, and I would also like to report on my experiences there as a Muslim. Unfortunately it has been my only race so far, as it was really a purely amateur race, and neither any papers nor certificates were required. The prize money was also very low, more of an expense allowance than a reward :-D But no matter, it was about the fun.

My husband and my mother were there on race day. After we finally got my stubborn stud in the trailer, we went to the village where the race was to take place. A racecourse was marked out in a large meadow. It was a very hot day and the racetrack was surrounded by many people with trailers and their horses and ponies.

At that time I didn't have a riding skirt, so I said to myself: sweat with dignity. I wore riding breeches so that I had a firm grip on the saddle, over that a trouser skirt, i.e. cloth trousers with a very wide cut, and over that a normal black skirt (which, however, always slipped over the knees when riding, so that is why I weared the trousers underneath). I also wore a long-sleeved T-shirt in XXL and a simple Amira hijab made of polyester. I attached it to my T-shirt with a safety pin so that it wouldn't fly up while running. Unfortunately it didn't work, I already lost the needle during the training session on site. Unfortunately I had no replacement.

Even before the race, my mare was so wild and excited that she climbed and bucked a few times and pawed the ground. I tried to calm her down and rode a few laps across the grounds. But she did not calm down. She saw the other horses from the other races running across the square and wanted to run with them. She got wilder and wilder and was already wet with sweat before the race had started. It was her very first time to go to a public show with other horses and people. Otherwise we were always alone in the hall or in the forest, there she was much more relaxed.

The people at the tournament had long since stopped watching the race and just stared at my mare and me. Of course, a woman with a headscarf on a crazy horse is an eye-catcher. I was already wet under my riding helmet and headscarf and my head was bright red. My race was called and I rode to the start line with the other participants. I was afraid. I knew that now my horse would run wild across the square like a wild bull. Once she really ran, there was no way stopping her. That's one of the reasons why I wanted to take part in the race. I really wanted to let her go for once, because I would never do something like that off-road, it would be too dangerous. I wanted to know how fast she really gets when you get everything out of her.

The starting gun was fired when I hadn't even stood on the line. The horses dashed off ... I was in the back. But we caught up. I had already lost control of the speed, my horse ran like crazy and only had one thing in mind: to get to the top. Her will to win was unbroken. I only steered her to keep her on track and pushed her more. She ran around the first lap and caught up from almost last place to third. It went into the second and final round. Slowly my strength slackened. The distance between me and the horse in front of me grew.

"Is she a Turkish girl !?", the spectators whispered during the race when they saw me. "No, she is German!" shouted my husband in their ear (he told me that later). During the race the headscarf flew over my face and my neck was free. Very embarrassing. I hurried to cover it, but was busy getting my horse under control.

In the last corner we came too far to the edge of the track and lost valuable time. I cheered on my mare again and she caught up. We rode through the finish line as third. But that's when the race just started for us. The other participants braked their horses after half a lap and slowed down to trot or walk. Not me. As if she were out of her mind, stressed by the many people and full of adrenaline, my mare raced on. At least a lap or two around the track. Shortly before the end we almost collided with a participant who was riding in the opposite direction. At the last moment I jerked the reins and brought my horse into a circle and finally to a stop. I was out of breath. My mare danced back and forth nervously.

The winners, including myself, were called out and prizes were presented. A corpulent elderly man handed me the trophy and looked grim. He said something like "watch out that you don't run over other people. "At that moment, as I later heard on the video of the award ceremony, a young woman said:" Wasn't there a burqa ban here !! ??" While making her disparaging comment about me, the elderly man handed me the trophy grudgingly. Suddenly, my mare turned around 180 degrees and knocked the unfriendly man with the rear, so that he stumbled and almost fell. I rode away to the winning lap and galloped around the square. I only saw later on the video that my horse had knocked someone, at that moment I hadn't even noticed it, I was so excited. A little glee overcame me, my horse had shown it to these unfriendly people once! I was proud to have won the third place. In my first race. Maybe I was the only Muslim woman who ever took part in one of these races, and we had shown them that a Muslim woman can ride!

After the race we tried to load my excited horse into the trailer. She was still very nervous. In one of our attempts to lead her into the hanger, she kicked back, broke free, and bunked. It happened so quickly that it wasn't until a few seconds later that I realized what was going on. She had caught my husband in the face with a hind hoof, who was standing diagonally behind her and tapped her lightly with the whip so that she could get into the trailer (it was a stupid position, of course we never did that again afterwards). Thank Allah it was just a big bruise on his cheekbone. Alhamdulillah. My mother took care of him and I ran after my horse. A couple of other riders had caught my mare. I thanked them and took my mare back to the trailer. There I tied her first and let her recover. After first aid had been given to my husband (yes, the 20 Euro prize money was then for the pharmacy or painkillers :-D), and my horse had calmed down, we invited it in and drove back to the stable. There I was greeted happily and they were happy that I was among the top three. I would have liked to take part in the next race a few months later, but unfortunately we had already moved to another state again by then.

Two years after this race there was another amateur race for horses of all breeds in another state, and I wanted to take part. But in the end I decided against it, also for the benefit of my horse. Firstly, the required papers, insurances and certificates, which were required, were sometimes strange and I hardly possessed any of them. Second, it was compulsory to have your horse fully shod. Since my horse always ran barefoot and still runs, I didn't want to have her shoes put on for one race. That would certainly not have helped her surefootedness in the short term. And I didn't want to risk a fall in the race.

Ein außergewöhnliches Outfit * An extraordinary outfit

 Assalamu aleikum,

(english version below)

Hm. Ich kenne es ja schon. Aber was soll man darauf antworten...

Also fragt mich doch!"

ENGLISH VERSION:

Assalamu aleikum,

it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon when I went riding once again. Meanwhile they know me at the new stable and there were no more strange looks. An elderly gentleman brought me the horse I was to ride and helped me saddle it up. After a while he looked at me, paused for a moment and then said: "A very unusual outfit what you are wearing!"

Hm. I already know that. But what can you answer... But he's right. Very unusual. Very extraordinary.

"Yes, that's right," I said with a smile.

"Well, I can ask, or ... is not meant badly. I don't care what kind of religious and political views someone has, we are happy about everyone who comes riding here. Just to say, I've never had seen an outfit like that in the riding stable, so you wear this when riding...?, "replied the man gently.

"Yes, I know, no problem, it is very seldom to see someone in a headscarf and dress at the stables. But you know, I wear normal riding clothes underneath, I designed the skirt myself and I wear it over the normal clothes, "I said.

"Ah, that's how it is! Yes, right, we once had a woman here from a royal family, I don't remember which country she was from, she was also wearing something strange...Long clothes and underneath, she showed me, she weared a jeans!"

Oh yes, I'm always amazed that the women still wear pants under their riding skirts ;-) Well, that's what I would like to change. People have got used to the image of headscarves on the street, in the city, in shops, on the bus, in restaurants. But at the riding stables no, you don't know it there. On the one hand, this may be due to the fact that not many Muslim girls ride, either because the lack of opportunities to do so or because they are not interested. And on the other hand, it could be because the Muslim women who ride may unfortunately generally not wear a hijab or swap their skirts for breeches to ride, which is very sad. Well, I want to help ensure that a covered woman at the stables is seen as "normal" and that people realize that we Muslims can also ride with skirts. Almost 100 years ago it was quite normal for women to ride in long clothes ... But today it seems to be a problem. Sure, riding breeches are practical and weren't invented without a reason, but why not wear a skirt over them to make your hobby halal too? And to be able to enjoy riding without a guilty conscience?

"Tell me if the questions bothers you, I'm just curious ..." said the man suddenly.

"Oh, that's not a problem, you know, I prefer someone to ask than someone just staring at me and figuring out his own things that might not be right. Some people think I'm a Turkish woman, but no, I'm a German woman. So ask me! "

I have often noticed that people who really ask honestly out of interest are shy about asking their questions. But no, please, ask! Ask the Muslim women why they cover themselves, ask them why they love their religion, ask them why they pray, ask them! I am sure they will be happy to answer. I am sure that most people prefer that than to be judged at first glance (for something that is mostly not true and does not apply to the person). If it's an honest question, politely phrased, you will get a polite, honest answer.

And again ... Since still not everyone has noticed: Yeah, we wear the headscarf by choice! Because it is a duty in Islam. And if Allah commands us to do something, it is because it is good for us. And if he forbids us to do something, it is because it is bad for us. And we trust in Allah and to him we will return. And those who are forced to take off the headscarf or are prevented from putting it one on at all are much more than the other way around, believe me.

We rode off. It was a great ride. Right at the beginning of the ride, the woman who was leading us asked us to change horses, as one of the riders could not get along with her horse. I should take over her horse. When dismounting, the embarrassing situation came, which every riding Muslim with hijab fears: You get stuck. Very embarrassing, it actually never happened to me ... Well, I had forgotten that I now ride in a western saddle, and a western saddle has a saddle horn. So when sliding down I got stuck with my long blouse and headscarf on the saddle horn, with my feet straight on the ground. I frantically loosened my clothes from the saddle horn and pulled them down. Of course I didn't look what the others saw, but they must have thought their part. Lesson for me: not only take care of the skirt when dismounting, but also of the blouse, especially with the western saddle!

Well, after the horse change it worked better. I got along better with the difficult horse and the other rider got along better with my previous horse. The rest of the ride went without major incidents. Alhamdulillah. Even if I got a slow horse this time, it was also a nice exercise to get along well with another character. But my gelding was very hard-working at the gallop. Only when walking and trotting you had to be careful not to lag too far behind. We had great sunny weather that day and trotted and galloped a lot. After riding, I scraped out the horse's hooves as always and then brought it to the pasture.

As I ran across the yard and pasture with the horse on a rope, I had to smile. Yes, actually an extraordinary outfit what I wear. And that at the riding stables! Especially, definitely. And that's good.

Because whoever adheres to his religion in times of Fitna gets more reward from Allah. (source, in arabic,: https://youtu.be/U1WAILZ_pHc )

May Allah make us firm upon Islam.

Wiedersehen mit meinem Pferd * Meet again with my horse

Assalamu aleikum,

(English version below the pictures)

                                            Pferde in beinahe unberührter Natur

                                 Meine Stute, friedlich grasend.

Die Herde zieht weiter...

                                          Erstes Wiedersehen mit meinem Pferd

English version:

Assalamu aleikum,

I told you that I brought my horse back to her homeland ... I can always visit her there, even if the way to this place is very long, because it is in Poland. But after weeks of separation, I was finally able to visit her. The next time will probably be in a few months, and then in a few years ... But I know she's very well. Even though I miss her very much, I am glad that my dream has come true and that she was allowed to return to the place where she was born and grew up before she came to me.
It was a long journey, but after a seemingly endless drive, we were finally there. This unique farm is located at the very edge of a village, behind which there is a huge nature reserve.
We spent a week there in the hotel, from the hotel room I could see the horses and the endless meadows. I visited my mare every day, but sometimes I couldn't find her after almost 40 minutes of walking, the pastures are so huge that a whole herd of horses can disappear behind the hills and forests. Then you have to walk a long time if you want to find your horse ;-)

The first day when I came and found my horse in the pasture, she was standing with the herd, not in the middle, but at least with them. She wasn't there for a long time when I visited her and she will need a little more time to adjust to her new everyday life, but I'm sure she can do it without any problems. I recognized her directly between all the other mares and foals, even if they all look similar to my horse (same breed ;-), that was a difference to the stables where she lived in Germany. In most cases, there are horses of many diffenernt colors and breeds, small and big, white or red... But there, they were mostly brown horses of the same breed. My mare came to me immediately when she saw me, I patted her and gave her an apple. That was probably not a good idea of mine, because the other horses immediately chased here away from me. "It's not possible that the new one gets pats and food, and we don't!",  must the other horses have thought. At least it looked like this :-D Horses are very jealous. My horse was not allowed to come to me for the next two days, although she looked when I came, the other horses did not allow her to come to me. I still stood at the pasture and watched here for a long time. On the third day it got better. She was already better integrated into the herd and the horses had got used to my visit. They left me in peace. My mare was allowed to come to me. She often stood near me, let herself be petted or fed with her favorite herbs that I found in the meadows. When I was there, she would stand near me, and when the herd moved on to another place to graze, she would walk with them, always with her ears turned back toward me. She made a relaxed impression. I enjoyed just watching the horses for hours, also from the balcony. If the fence had not been stretched around the meadows and forests, one could have thought that one was watching a herd of wild horses. Nobody intervenes, nobody disturbs them, they eat the grasses and herbs that are there ... Very romantic. But also tough. In winter there is no warm stable, no blankets and no oats, and there are no boxes for the horses to retreat to. But there is a lot of space and trees that provide shade and fresh water. And a nice herd of horses. That's what all horses really need, isn't it ... Lots of freedom and wide land. The conversational tone in the herd was also significantly rougher than one is used to in the normal riding stables. I could really see how a mare kept watch on a hill while the others were grazing in the valley. In the morning the herd stood close to the house to protect themselves from the sun and mosquitoes in the shelter there. In the course of the afternoon the herd always moved to different places until they moved to their "night place" in the evening, a valley a little lower down with a lot of lush grass. It was very nice to see such a natural horse life.

When I was there I felt confirmed again. Yes, it was right to bring my horse here now and not wait any longer. I would not have found my peace of mind for my horse anywhere else than here.
She probably wouldn't have felt as comfortable in Tunisia as she did here. And there are good horses in Tunisia too. There are horses everywhere. Of course not this one ... But my horse deserves to enjoy her retirement in the best of health in this little paradise for horses...

The last time I saw her I stroked her forehead and scratched her between the ears... At some point she went back to the herd. Then she walked up a little hill and dozed, her ears relaxed. As if she wanted to tell me: Hey, it's all right, you can leave me here.

I am very grateful to the owner of the farm that my horse can spend his early retirement there. I will definitely come again and visit my horse.
But I'm happy for her and I don't want her back either, because she's fine there. I have to think of the movie scene from Hidalgo, where the main actor released his faithful horse into freedom. With one tearful eye, because he gives up his beloved animal, and with a laughing one, because he gives his horse the well-deserved freedom that he can spend with the herd. Perhaps there was a new horse in this man's life afterwards, but for his old one, which did so much for him, the time had come to say goodbye.

Neue Blusen sind da :-) * New clothes arrived

Assalamu aleikum,

Assalamu aleykum,

every time it gets a bit better with the riding clothes ;-) Despite Corona, a new load of clothes has finally made its way to Germany, alhamdulillah. You already know the riding skirts with the buttons, the headscarves and the recently added blouses (or you can also call them shirts, but I'll say blouses because they're for women ;-).
What has improved this time? The elastic waistband of the riding skirt has become narrower and much softer and more elastic. The blouses are also longer than last time, especially the sleeves. For this purpose I had made the stripes, if any, made lengthways this time (then the wearer looks slimmer than if the stripes are crosswise). The fabric turned out best. Very light and fine and the best: almost non-iron! The blouses and headscarves are one size, the length and waist size of the riding skirt vary. The clothing is almost exclusively made to order, only good fabrics are used and the clothing is handmade from Tunisia! My mother-in-law and the seamstress always go to great lengths to make everything perfect and to live up to my ideas and designs. Half the family is also busy transporting and collecting the clothes from A to B. May Allah reward them for their efforts! I am very grateful to them that it always works out so well.
Of course, it can still happen that parts of the clothes arrive late, are not 100 percent perfect (keyword: handcraft manufacturing!) or that the desired color is not always available. Sometimes I have to improvise, e.g. if a blue blouse is desired, in the end there is only dark blue striped fabric or light gray available... I try to comply with the wishes very precisely, but it does not always work because I am (not yet, or not always) on site . I ask for understanding! When the clothes are there, the person who has ordered from me will always get an email with precise information about the contents of the package and whether everything fits. Then you can confirm or cancel again.
I am also really happy if you give me feedback when the clothes have arrived and whether you like them!

P.S. Of course you can wear the clothes not only for riding, but also in everyday life ;-) But they are definitely suitable for stables!
You can look at the pictures above! :-)

Praktische Tipps fürs Leben mit Kopftuch - practical tips for life with hijab

Assalamu aleikum,

(english version below)

Also bitte viel Abstand halten.

Was nun?

English version:

Assalamu aleikum,

as a woman who is wearing a headscarf one has quite a few challenges in life, apart from the unfriendly looks and the incomprehension of society, there are also a few practical problems. I would like to talk about these problems today, and perhaps bring some relief...
Do you know that nice feeling in summer when the wind blows through your hair and you feel a slight cooling? No? Neither do I. I only know the heat and the sweat that runs down my forehead under the headscarf. And that bright red head that you get when it's hot, you do sports AND wear a hijab. An unbearable combination : -D But, we don't have to suffer in silence. There are a few tricks that can help! For the feeling of a breath of fresh air at home, simply set the blow dryer to a cold setting and blow dry your hair. Yes, it's not outside, but at least you have this feeling again in the halal version ;-) If the hair is still slightly damp from the shower, perfect. You feel like you've just been swimming in the sea. Or almost. A fan is cool for that too. Well, until the hair gets into it. Then it is no longer nice. So please keep your distance.
If you are outside and have to keep your headscarf on, simply pour water on your head. Sounds banal, but it really helps! Really good at 1 p.m. on the mountain hike at 33 degrees outside. So nice. Rub water on your face and tip a few handfuls of water onto your head on the headscarf or moisten the scarf with it. Cold water, cools super fast, is easy, free and always at hand. And protects against the next heat stroke.

If you miss the sun and don't have a balcony or a garden where nobody can see you, you have to be content with a window with a curtain. If the sun is strong, just sit in front of the window and let the sun dry your hair there. Direct UV radiation is harmful to your hair anyway, they will thank you for wearing your hijab outside! And your skin anyway. It also becomes less wrinkled with age. Pretty practical. And sunburns practically never happen again.

Next problem, you come out of the shower after washing your hair, maybe you have a towel around your head in the form of a turban to dry your wet dripping hair, and now you have to pray. Or just now the doorbell rings and the postman is there. What now? Towel off, headscarf on and your wet hair soakes your clothes and the water running down your legs? Rather uncomfortable. No time for blow-drying? No problem. Please fold the tip of the turban on your head back once and place it tightly on the back of your head, the ends of the towel
fold in at the bottom. Put on a headscarf for prayer or for the postman. It doesn't go well with the towel for a long time, but it can be very helpful for 5 minutes.
Regarding to washing your hair, you should wash your hair preferably not more than every other day and then press dry with a towel and let it air dry in the house, or set the hairdryer to a cold setting. Please do not put on the headscarf and go out with wet or damp hair! The drying process of the hair is delayed enormously and the moist, warm environment under the towel with a wet head is not at all good for the hair and scalp. So please always dry your hair first, and then go out. Ideally, of course, you wash your hair when you know that you will be home for the day or the next few hours. Should it ever have to go super fast, at least towel-dry your hair and make sure that the hair is completely dry from roots to neck, and braid the rest of the hair into a loose pigtail and let it dangle under your clothes and not in a tight bun tie. Because wet hair is sensitive.

Another hijabi problem is when you come back home from a long day outside, especially in summer, when it's hot, and the hairstyle under the hijab looks not as its best. Here it works wonders if you moisten the hairline with wet hands (or pour a glass of water over it), then rub dry with a towel and shake the entire hair upside down. If you then spray your hair with hairspray, it feels like you have just washed it.

Long trips for hijabis? It is very uncomfortable to have to wear the headscarf for long days and also to sleep in it is very uncomfortable, and it slips anyway during sleep. And the hair underneath also needs care and needs to be brushed. That doesn't work with hijab. My tip for long car trips: let the rear windows tint black, and place a blanket between the front seats in the car and tighten it. If you get in the back of the car, nobody can see you now and you can take off your headscarf. If it is not completely opaque, it makes sense not to wear an Amira hijab or khimar during the trip, but a large scarf that you put over your hair. You can loosen it up a little when you sleep, and still make sure that everything is covered. But at least it's a bit more airy.

With all the little everyday difficulties, we must never forget that we wear the hijab for Allah and for no one else, and that it is our duty to cover ourselves and that not wearing the hijab is one of the greatest sins for a woman !!! We will be rewarded for our patience and wearing hijab in shaa Allah.
Before some sisters may doubt the hijab because it only causes them problems, they should look for other ways to solve these problems and not think about taking off their hijab. This life is a test and it is up to us to pass it.

In addition, apart from its religious benefits, the hijab also has some advantages:

When eating out, the hair is never in the plate again!

When you eat ice cream, the wind doesn't blow your hair in your face and stick with the greasy ice cream!

You are treated with respect, especially by men, and not turned on.

You protect your skin from skin cancer by covering your body from the sun.

Your hair is not damaged as much by the sun.

You don't have to worry about hairstyles and make-up when you go out or get invited.

You learn to be humble.

You feel closer to Allah when you obey him.

In times of Corona you always have your mask with you, just turn the scarf or headscarf into a niqab!

And what are your insider tips ;-)?
